When thinking about lead poisoning most people think about peeling paint. But there are hidden lead poisoning hazards & dangers many are not aware of in children’s toys and costume jewelry. Lead is often used as a pigmentation in plastics, rubber & paint. It is very hard to know which toys contain lead. And often times costume jewelry is made out of metals containing high levels of lead.
To help reduce lead exposure in your children, here are a few tips…..
- Go with wood over plastic toys
- Throw out old toys
- Keep metal jewelry away from children
- Buy name brand toys and toys manufactured in the US or Europe
- Subscribe to recall notices with the CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION
- Have your children tested for lead on a yearly basis
